Lucas: Amid host of problems, Gov. Healey highlights LGBTQ issues Maura Healey has the LGBTQ agenda on the brain. It’s all the governor talks about, or so it seems.Which is great for that community, of which she has recently become a leader, but not so great for the heterosexual majority  of the population. They expect Healey to be governor of all the people, straight and gay.The gay community was thrilled to watch Healey posing for pictures with drag queens in front of the State House prior to the recent Boston Pride parade, which she marched in.The Pride flag was raised on the State House flagpole. It was a first.“We will go forward and lead the country,” she said. “Love is love.”Keep in mind that Healey, the state’s first openly gay governor, was not always so open about her sexuality, but only recently “came out” in a fawning Boston Globe story that ran in January after she had been elected governor. The article was about how happy Healey, 52, was with her new partner Joanna Lydgate 42, the mother of two, who separated from her husband to partner ...

Moore: Reality check finds Bidenomics coming up short

Moore: Reality check finds Bidenomics coming up short Word out of the White House is that President Joe Biden wants to tout his economic successes. He’s even embracing the slogan “Bidenomics” — which most people think is a term of derision and policy flops. On the one hand, the unemployment rate is low and millions of jobs have been created over the past two years. Reality check: Virtually all of these jobs are simply the recovery of jobs that already existed in the Trump years but were lost during the COVID lockdowns — mostly in blue statesIf the economy is so strong, why aren’t Americans feeling the love? Tracking polls still show two-thirds of Americans believing the country/economy are headed in “the wrong direction.” Something just doesn’t feel right. Here are some reasons why:First and foremost, it has been the economic reality that for most families, in 22 of the last 25 months, inflation has outpaced wages. So how can the White House claim that worker pay is rising? Here’s the trick...

‘Joy Ride’ a raunchy comedy trip worth taking

Published Fri, 27 Dec 2024 06:20:13 GMT

‘Joy Ride’ a raunchy comedy trip worth taking “Joy Ride” is an Asian-American “Hangover”-style comedy with two small-town best friends named Audrey (Ashley Park, “Emily in Paris”) and Lolo (comedian Sherry Cola) traveling to Beijing with a couple of friends, where they get into some funny and nasty business. “Joy Ride” is not just funny. It’s an exercise in comedy cultural payback and an examination of Asian-American anger. Just check out the flashback in which adopted Audrey and Lolo first meet as children in a Washington state playground where Lolo busts a white, racist bully boy right in the chops. As my colleagues have also reported, the audience at the screening I attended burst into spontaneous applause at the sight of this. For my part, I do not understand why, after the enormous 2018 success of “Crazy Rich Asians” which was co-written by the “Joy Ride”’s first-time director Adele Lim, it hasn’t spawned a dozen knockoffs by now. Lim co-wrote “Joy Ride” with Cherry Chevapravatdumrong (TV’s “Family G...

Sundresses the essence of summer casual-chic

Published Fri, 27 Dec 2024 06:20:13 GMT

Sundresses the essence of summer casual-chic Sundresses are the sartorial harbingers of true summer. When it gets hot, we reach for them because they make us feel cool, and they make us look good while doing so. But most of all, we wear sundresses to coax the sun gods on. We crave the sun, and dress for it.It should be said that a ‘sundress’ is not the same thing as a ‘summer dress.’ The latter can mean almost anything — from a come-hither white slip to a flamenco. All are fantastic. But FYI, if someone tells you that they have a great “summer dress,” just understand, it probably isn’t the same as what I’m talking about here.A sundress is something that makes you feel comfy but just a little bit sexy, casual and cool at the same time. Here are my top picks:Set the scene with the Finer Things printed Midi Dress ($128 on freepeople.com) — I especially love it in the Ivory Combo print. It’s a beautiful standout with bright and gorgeous petal printing, craftsmanship, and also exceptional detailing. It’s hard to imagine that some of ...

Dear Abby: Is it a good idea to seek out secret half-sister?

Dear Abby: Is it a good idea to seek out secret half-sister? Dear Abby: I’m 36 years old and married with three children. I have two siblings I have a good relationship with. The problem is we have a half-sister two years younger than I am who doesn’t know we exist. When my parents were married, my father had an affair with a married woman, and they conceived my half-sister.My parents ultimately divorced. My father’s mistress went back to her husband, and they remain married to this day. My half-sister was never told who her biological father is or that she has three half-siblings.I have struggled my entire life with sharing this information with my half-sister because I don’t want to ruin her life. My father passed away 20 years ago, so she will never have a relationship with him. My siblings also haven’t been able to bring themselves to share this information with her, and I remain torn because we are close in age, look alike and have gone into similar fields of work.I’d love to have a relationship with h...

Stock market today: Asian markets extend losses after Wall Street drifts lower BANGKOK (AP) — Shares slipped in Asia on Thursday after Wall Street drifted downward following a rally that sent it roaring 16% higher for the year so far. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dropped 3% on heavy selling of Chinese banks shares after Goldman Sachs downgraded them citing concerns about the slowing economy and lenders’ exposures to debt. Japan’s Nikkei 225 lost 1.7%. U.S. futures declined and oil prices were mixed. Share prices had soared recently amid signs the U.S. economy is stronger than had been feared, fending off recession so far despite high interest rates. Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting released Wednesday showed that some central bank officials wanted to raise rates in mid-June, though in the end they voted unanimously to keep rates steady. The threat of further rate hikes has been weighing on investor sentiment. The next focus for the U.S. will be jobs data due out on Friday.Markets are also watching for updates on tensions between the ...
