SPRING HILL, Fla. (WSVN) — A fifth-grade teacher is under investigation by the Florida Department of Education for inappropriate conduct after showing her class Disney’s 2022 animated film “Strange World.” The movie features an openly gay character who has a crush on another character. The teacher, known as “Becoming a Better Barbie” on TikTok, defended her decision, saying that she did not believe she did anything wrong. “I had permission slips from the beginning of the year. The whole fifth-grade team had five permission slips for PG movies with no objection to specific content. I actually did have one student who did have objections to the specific content, not showing the Buzz Lightyear movie. She wasn’t in my classroom anymore, so it wasn’t a big deal,” the teacher said on TikTok.The teacher was reported to the state by a school board member, whose daughter was in the classroom at the time of the screening. The European Union’s Commissioner for Research and Innovation Mariya Gabriel has resigned from her EU post as she takes on the challenge of forming a new Bulgarian coalition government.Gabriel was picked last week by the leader of her party Boyko Borissov to become Bulgaria’s next prime minister. Bulgarian President Rumen Radev gave her the institutional mandate on Monday to form a government. The Bulgarian center-right politician joined the EU executive as commissioner for digital affairs in 2017 and took on the portfolio of research, innovation, education and culture at the start of the current mandate, in 2019. Her track record in Brussels was mixed — she enjoyed a reputation as a young, dynamic commissioner with a genuine passion for technological progress, but one who lacked the gravitas to advance her agenda and who would push her staff to the breaking point, POLITICO reported Monday. In a statement, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that she’d acce...Elon in Paris: Tesla boss gets red-carpet treatment from Macron amid green investment push

PARIS — Call it the Musk paradox. As Twitter CEO, Elon Musk gets no love from European politicians. As Tesla’s boss, he’s welcomed with open arms. That dynamic was on full display Monday in Paris, where one of the world’s richest men arrived in a Tesla to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron, amid France’s push to attract investments in electric cars. “With Elon Musk, we talked about the attractiveness of France and the significant progress in the electric vehicle and energy sectors,” Macron tweeted. The two men mentioned “several topics of common interest,” an official from the Elysée palace said after the meeting, “including the European and French response to the [U.S. Inflation Reduction Act].”Le patron de Tesla, Elon Musk, reçu par Emmanuel Macron à l'Élysée pic.twitter.com/0ayikvu8vC— BFMTV (@BFMTV) May 15, 2023Musk’s visit comes as Macron hosts CEOs from all over the world at the Château ...UAE invites Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad to COP28 climate summit

The United Arab Emirates has invited Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to attend this year’s United Nations climate summit, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported Monday. The Gulf country is set to host COP28 in Dubai from November 30 to December 12. According to SANA, the UAE’s embassy handed Assad an official invitation from President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Sunday. The invitation comes as a growing number of Arab countries are starting to revive relations with the Assad regime, which has presided over a brutal 12-year civil war that has killed more than 300,000 people and driven half the population from their homes. The Arab League readmitted Syria earlier this month. POLITICO reached out to the United Nations climate body, the UAE climate envoy’s office and the UAE embassy in Damascus for comment, but did not get a response at the time of publication. The Weeknd is no more. (CNN) — The Weeknd is now officially known online by his real name — Abel Makkonen Tesfaye — after following through on plans to update his social media accounts. On Monday, the Canadian artist’s Twitter and Instagram accounts had updated to display his birth name rather than his artistic name. And the change is part of a wider plan to “kill The Weeknd,” Tesfaye told W Magazine in an interview published May 8.“I’m going through a cathartic path right now,” he said.“It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn.”And Tesfaye revealed that his upcoming album might well be The Weeknd’s swansong.“The album I’m working on now is probably my last hurrah as T...Brace yourselves, travelers: This summer could be ‘one for the record books’

(CNN) — Memorial Day weekend — the unofficial start of the summer travel season in the United States — is shaping up to be busy. At airports, it’s likely to be busier than it was in 2019 pre-pandemic, according to the AAA travel forecast released Monday. The automotive and trip-planning group expects 42.3 million Americans to travel 50 miles or more from home over the holiday weekend. That’s a 7% increase over 2022 or 2.7 million more people. And the group says that’s a sign of what travelers should expect this summer.“More Americans are planning trips and booking them earlier, despite inflation,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, in a statement. “This summer travel season could be one for the record books, especially at airports.”Air travel is expected to be up by 11% over last year, with 3.4 million people expected to fly over the holiday weekend. That figure exceeds 2019 levels by 5.4% — or 17...Don’t use sugar substitutes for weight loss, World Health Organization advises

(CNN) — Don’t use sugar substitutes if you are trying to lose weight, according to a new guideline from the World Health Organization. The global health body said a systematic review of the available evidence had suggested that use of non-sugar sweeteners, or NSS, “does not confer any long-term benefit in reducing body fat in adults or children.”The review also indicated that there might be “potential undesirable effects” from the long-term use of sugar substitutes such as an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.“Replacing free sugars with NSS does not help with weight control in the long term. People need to consider other ways to reduce free sugars intake, such as consuming food with naturally occurring sugars, like fruit, or unsweetened food and beverages,” Francesco Branca, WHO director for nutrition and food safety, said in a news release.“NSS are not essential dietary factors and have no nu...Latest news
